Supporting gender diversity

Protecting natural heritage with 12% voluntary set asides

We use three different protection classes1 to ensure a comprehensive conservation approach is taken, with approximately 12% of our forests (6,300+ hectares) are completely protected from commercial forestry. Another 10% of the forestland is managed with a focus on conservation, prioritising environmental objectives first.

1 Forest Stewardship Council’s® Representative Sample Area, European Commission’s definition of potential old growth forests, and WWF’s proposed criteria for strict protection areas in line with the European Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

The density of our forests in Romania has increased by more than 1 million cubic metres since 2016, thanks to our commitment to responsible forest management.

Teaching tomorrow's foresters

The Forest Management Project, an online program for 124 students from 11 high schools in 2020, aimed to familiarise participants with modern forest management, showing how technology supports sustainable forestry.

Pausing for bird nesting seasons

We suspend activities on more than 20% of our properties every year between and beyond April and July, specifically timed to coincide with the specific nesting seasons of different bird species in our forestland.

Working with local industries

The team work closely with local communities, establishing partnerships to support local entrepreneurship including offering truffle harvesting rights and involving local companies in our daily forest operations.

Providing local jobs

Over 90% of our operations are supported by local businesses and we support more than 750 jobs in the logging and transportation sectors across 105 local communities.

We have also taken the groundbreaking step to establish our own in-house forestry team. In addition to the operational efficiencies, it allows us more control over working standards, taking a leadership approach to elevate the forestry industry in Romania.
