IKEA expands second-hand marketplace to Sweden, now active in five countries

Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, is launching its second-hand marketplace in Sweden, the home of IKEA, on 28 January. The platform will then be available in five countries – Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland, and Sweden. It is enabling customers to buy and sell pre-owned IKEA products locally. The initiative supports IKEA’s ambition to make sustainable living more accessible and affordable, helping to extend the life of products and reduce waste.

“With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in Swedenwe’re taking a meaningful step toward unlocking an even more affordable IKEA range while making it easy for customers to prolong the life of their items.

Kirsten Andersson, Managing Director for Platform & Marketplaces at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group)

By scaling the marketplace across multiple countries, Ingka Group aims to reach a milestone of 170,000 listings in 2026. Each item posted includes recommended pricing, high-quality images, and exact product dimensions, making it easy for customers to participate in prolonging the life of the products.

Following successful pilots in Spain and Norway, and after launching in Portugal and Poland in 2025, IKEA has gained valuable insights into customer preferences, pricing models, and operational challenges in the second-hand market. These learnings have helped shape the launch in Sweden. IKEA co-workers have been the first sellers and ambassadors, ensuring the platform is filled with the first products before opening up to the wider public.

“With the launch of IKEA second-hand marketplace in Sweden, we’re taking a meaningful step toward unlocking an even more affordable IKEA range while making it easy for customers to prolong the life of their items. Our ambition is to build the most vibrant and inclusive community where people connect with each other and with IKEA to make home furnishing pass-on easy, accessible, and rewarding,” said Kirsten Andersson, Managing Director for Platform & Marketplaces at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group).

“In markets where the service is already live, we’ve seen strong demand for bedroom furniture, storage solutions, and living room seating. It’s especially encouraging to see customers returning to buy or sell more items from the IKEA range,” added Andersson.

A growing second-hand market

The global second-hand furniture market is growing rapidly, with a projected annual growth rate of 7%, expected to reach USD 43 billion by 2030. Today, IKEA’s products already make up around 9% of the second-hand market in Europe and 4% on the global level. According to a study by Ingka Group in collaboration with GlobeScan, 52% of younger people regularly buy second-hand furniture or household items mainly to save money. This group typically includes people living with their parents or with young children, based in urban areas, with low to medium incomes, and who shop at IKEA frequently.

“We’re witnessing a cultural shift where buying second-hand furniture is no longer stigmatized. It’s stylish, smart, and socially accepted. With half of people donating unwanted items and two in five reselling them, the rise of resale and donation culture reflects changing values across generations. In response to this shift, we aim to simplify and enhance second-hand buying and selling experience by providing a platform where customers can buy and sell second-hand products directly from each other. This aligns with evolving customer expectations,” added Kirsten Andersson.

Unparalleled support for both sellers and buyers

Sellers can easily participate by scanning their IKEA product, after which the platform takes care of the rest. They receive instant price recommendations, professional product photos, and accurate measurements. Each listing includes detailed descriptions, assembly guides, and care instructions to support buyers. Sellers can choose between receiving cash or boosting their earnings with a 15% topped-up IKEA digital refund card. The marketplace in Sweden is available at IKEA.se/marketplace and is free of charge.

The new marketplace is part of IKEA’s strategy to expand its omnichannel business, introducing new digital business platforms that make home furnishing more accessible, affordable and convenient.
