Climate & Nature

At IKEA, we are guided by our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people. A better planet is a better home for us all. To live up to this vision in an increasingly complex world, we must play our part in tackling some of the big challenges facing humanity. With our size and reach, we have a big responsibility — and many opportunities — to play our part in addressing climate change and the interrelated crises of nature and biodiversity loss, water scarcity and resource scarcity.

Creating a better future

We know we have a huge responsibility – and many opportunities – to play our part on climate change. As stubborn optimists, we believe that we can create a better future.

There are many existing solutions to tackle the climate crisis, but we urgently need to accelerate action. This can help create new opportunities for job creation, innovation, economic growth and reduced energy costs. We are taking action to reduce GHG emissions in our operations through operational improvements, energy efficiency and transitioning to renewable energy. In FY25 Ingka Group achieved a 70.6% reduction in absolute emissions from our own operations (e.g. emissions from energy use in our units and operational waste) against our FY16 baseline, and a 22.3% reduction since FY24.

Climate Action: Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many people.

In today’s world, this means taking concrete steps across our operations — for example, matching 94.8% of our electricity use with renewable electricity sourcing, and 60.1% of our share of retail home deliveries were made by electric or other zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles by the end of FY25. We are retrofitting units with renewable heating and cooling (electrified systems, either heat pumps powered by renewable electricity, or geothermal). In FY25, over 2/3rds of our units were no longer powered by traditional gas boilers. In FY25, Ingka Group achieved a 70.6% reduction in absolute emissions from our own operations (e.g. emissions from energy use in our units and operational waste) against our FY16 baseline, and a 22.3% reduction since FY24.

Nature and biodiversity

We know the future relevance, success and security of our business is directly linked to how we address the nature crises today. Actions we take through our business, including e.g. how we build and run our facilities (stores, distribution centres, renewable energy sites, and customer meeting points), how we manage our forests and our business practices all have an impact on nature and biodiversity.

In FY25, 94.7% of our forestland portfolio was certified by a third-party scheme, and 5.3% was undergoing certification. We are focusing our nature work on biodiversity, land restoration, water, pollution, and GHG emissions, as aligned with Science Based Targets for Nature (SBTN) guidance. We aim to better map and reduce our impact, with progress reported in our annual sustainability reporting.

choosing materials with a lower embodied carbon
In FY25, 98.4% of our electricity was matched to renewable sources.
We generate renewable electricity on-site at our stores and facilities using solar panels, purchase electricity from wind and solar farms owned by Ingka Investments, and use energy attribute certificates where direct sourcing is not yet possible.

to set emission reduction targets
By the end of FY25
60.1% of our retail home deliveries were made by electric or other zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles.
Increasing investments in lower-emission assets
such as renewable energy infrastructure and protected forest land
Developing circular services, such as repair, resale and take-back services
to help customers prolong the life of their products

renewable heating and cooling (electrified systems, either heat pumps powered by renewable electricity, or geothermal). Over 2/3rds of our units are no longer powered by traditional gas boilers, to over 2/3 of our units are no longer heated by traditional gas boilers.

Renewable Electricity Sourcing: In FY25 we sourced renewable energy to match 94.8% of our annual electricity consumption. 7.8% of our electricity consumption was produced from on-site renewable generation, 49.1% of our consumption was matched by owning and operating our own wind and solar parks, and 37.9% was matched with Energy Attribute Certificates purchased on the market.
