Everyday Living

Many people want to take climate action but not at the expense of price, quality or convenience. We want our products and services to be affordable, attractive and accessible, so those choices are within reach for more people. https://www.ingka.com/projects/people-planet-consumer-insights-trends/

What we aim to achieve

By promoting more sustainable home furnishing and food products, energy services, solutions to help prolong the lives of products, life-at-home knowledge, and inspiration, we can make healthier and more sustainable living possible for the many people. To achieve this, we actively listen to people in each of our markets and work together with others to create meaningful connections and experiences.

By promoting plant-rich food, practical ways to reduce food waste, solutions for water and energy efficiency, as well as solutions that can help keep the products in use for longer; we want to make it easier for the many people to take action and use resources more efficiently. https://www.un.org/en/actnow/ten-actions

Our focus areas:

  • Shifting to plant-rich diets
  • Reducing food waste at home
  • Enabling customers to take steps to save energy and water
  • Involving people in the circular economy to reuse, repair, refurbish and recycle
  • Supporting good-quality sleep

Our actions

Plant-rich diets

Every year, IKEA is serving millions of food customers around the world. By including more plant-based alternatives on our menus, we can enable and inspire more people to try plant-based eating. One of the ways we can achieve our vision, is to offer affordable and accessible plant-based food. We offer them at the same or lower price than meat-based alternatives. Plant based food generally has lower greenhouse gas emission than comparable meat based food according to leading climate research*  https://www.un.org/en/climatechange/science/climate-issues/food

To reach even more customers, we also offer plant-rich alternatives.

Food waste

A big part of the food we throw away happens at home. Food waste can be avoided with proper planning, cooking and storing. Through our products and communications, we share practical tips and affordable solutions to help people do exactly that. Reducing food waste can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is recognised by Project Drawdown as an important climate action.  https://drawdown.org/programs/drawdown-labs/deep-dives/food-waste

Buy and sell second-hand

We want to make it easy for our customers to buy and sell pre-loved IKEA pieces, either directly from IKEA or from other customers through the IKEA Second hand Marketplace, currently available in five countries. Through our Buyback service, customers can sell their IKEA furniture back to the store and receive in store credit. They can also choose to shop second chance products, such as ex-display products, available in 424 IKEA stores.

Spare and assembly parts

Another way of prolonging the life of products is by offering assembly and spare parts. In FY25 we provided 26.7 million free assembly parts – including nuts, bolts, screws and dowels – to 2.3 million customers via ikea.com, helping them repair their products and keep them in use for longer. Read more about this in our Annual Summary and Sustainability Report FY25 (p. 42)

Tips and ideas that can help make a difference at home

We also continue to develop our spaces within our stores and online designed to build awareness about resourceful practices at home. We use them to highlight products and actions that can help customers to: use less energy, use less water, generate less waste, and keep products in use for longer.
