IKEA to test direct offers to sellers through its second-hand marketplace as the platform expands to the UK and Ireland

Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, is taking the next step in developing the IKEA second-hand marketplace. IKEA will test integrating its Buyback service in Portugal and Spain, giving sellers the choice of receiving an offer directly from IKEA when they list an eligible product. At the same time, IKEA Family members in the UK and Ireland can now buy and sell pre-owned IKEA products directly with one another on the second-hand marketplace.

The next phase builds on more than two years of learning since the first marketplace tests began in Madrid and Oslo in June 2024.

Across the first six markets, the marketplace received 15 million visits and generated 95,700 listings up to 31 August 2026. It is also helping IKEA form new customer relationships, 25.5% of marketplace users are new or reactivated IKEA Family members.

Affordability remains at the heart of the marketplace. On average, pre-owned IKEA products listed on the platform can cost 60% less than their new IKEA equivalents, giving customers another way to furnish their homes within their budget.

“We started small, listened closely and have developed the marketplace step by step. The data tells us there is clear interest. Testing the option for customers to sell direct to IKEA on the marketplace and exploring delivery partnerships are practical next steps. Together with the launch in the UK and Ireland, these tests will help us make it simpler for the many people to buy and sell pre-owned IKEA products.”

Buyback, which allows customers to sell eligible pre-owned products directly to IKEA, will be connected with the marketplace on a test basis in Portugal and Spain by the end of December 2026. When listing an eligible product, sellers will also have the option to receive an offer direct from IKEA as long as the item is listed. They can then choose whether to sell to another customer or take the product to an IKEA store to complete the Buyback process.

IKEA is also testing delivery partnerships to help buyers and sellers move products from one home to another, particularly larger furniture. A trial with TippTapp is currently live in Portugal and Sweden, connecting customers who need help moving an item with people who can transport it.

IKEA products are estimated to account for 9% of the home furnishing second-hand market*.In FY25, Ingka Group sourced almost 686,500 used IKEA products through Buyback for resale.

The IKEA second-hand marketplace is already available in Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland, Sweden and Belgium. With today’s launch in the UK and Ireland, it is now live in eight European markets. Next week (14 October) it will launch too in Germany.

IKEA Family members can list products free of charge. The platform helps sellers identify their IKEA product and add useful details, including IKEA product information, images, measurements, and a suggested price. When an item sells, sellers can choose a bank transfer or an IKEA digital refund card with 15% extra value, which can be used across IKEA.
