IKEA rolls out big investment plan in Spain – starting with new city store opening in Madrid

Today Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, opened a new city store in Madrid IKEA Torrejón. The opening is part of the retailer’s extensive expansion plan in Spain, which includes investing 150 million euros, opening several new customer meeting points and recruiting more than 1500 new co-workers in three years.

IKEA Torrejón will be the sixth IKEA store in Madrid, along with the full-size IKEA stores in Alcorcón, Ensanche de Vallecas and San Sebastián de los Reyes, and the two city stores in Goya and Las Rozas.

The new store, that’s located in the Parque Corredor shopping center, covers approximately 7500 sqm, of which 5400 sqm are commercial. It’s smaller than the full-size IKEA stores, but still offers everything customers love about the IKEA experience, including inspiring showrooms, planning support for more complex purchases, and a new Swedish Deli where customers can get a taste of Sweden.

A team of 130 co-workers support customers with their home furnishing expertise. With more than 5,000 products exhibited in the store and half of them available to buy and bring home directly, customers can also order the full IKEA range with convenient delivery options.

"We are thrilled to open our sixth store in Madrid and bring the IKEA experience to even more customers in Spain. This new store opening is part of our larger expansion plan in Spain, and we look forward to continuing to invest in and create jobs in the region."

– Nurettin Acar, CEO and CSO of IKEA Spain

The new city store is part of an extensive expansion plan in Spain, where IKEA will invest 150 million euros and recruit 1500 people in three years (FY23-25). Just during the coming months IKEA Spain will open five additional city stores and a number of plan and order points in Barcelona, Madrid and Andalucía. Adding to this IKEA Spain will open more than 60 branded collection points across Spain.

"With our omnichannel approach we’re now coming closer to millions of people in Spain, making it easier to live a better, and more affordable life at home. We're thrilled to be able to bring the IKEA experience to even more people, in different formats and in more convenient locations than ever before."

– Tolga Öncü, Head of IKEA Retail, Ingka Group

Spain has been chosen by IKEA Retail (Ingka Group) as a country with strong growth potential in which to test projects that will foreseeably mark its future. The investment is also part of the company’s global strategy to open new formats in city centres, to get closer to ‘the many people’.

Ingka Group has recently opened city stores in Rome, London, and Mumbai. This year, the retailer will also open its first city stores in San Francisco and Copenhagen, as well as the smaller format IKEA plan and order points (known as IKEA planning studios in some markets) across several countries.
