Investment scope

Securing available financial resources

We keep resources secure for IKEA Retail because we're careful with where we invest. We invest, for example, in bond markets, stocks in public companies and funds that focus on creating value for people and the planet.

Optimising risk-adjusted returns

We base our investment strategies on a macro-economic outlook to optimize an attractive long-term yield on the portfolio. We do not invest in areas that conflict with our purpose and mandate, and we use external benchmarks to measure how well we are doing and guide our choices.

With this as a base, we turn our focus on investments that deliver an impact, solving the challenges in today’s world. We are continually refining the parameters we are guided by as regulations and best practices evolve.

In line with the IKEA vision, we aim to make responsible investments in people and businesses that generate profits with purpose.

A mandate to invest according to strict policy

We ensure that all investments within the portfolio comply not only with industry best practice but also with Ingka Group’s policy and direction on sustainability and societal impact.

This means we completely avoid investments in certain areas (fossil fuels, weapons, tobacco) and ensuring that our investments follow the principles of doing No-Significant-Harm. Our definitions are based on the agreed principles in UN Principles for Responsible Investing and international conferences such as the Paris Agreement. We also implement plans compliant with the Science Based Target initiative.

Ocean desalination

Waterise (via Equitix)

Using proven subsea technology with reverse osmosis membranes to produce safe and clean access to drinking water in water-stressed regions around the world.

Business intelligence for sustainabilty insights

Providing business intelligence solutions for real estate owners and operators in the US, with a focus on achieving sustainability goals, improve building performance and cost efficiencies.

Synthetic materials

Nanogence (via Planet First Partners)

Material innovation company developing synthetic materials to reduce emissions and cost in construction.

Repurposing food waste

Reducing emissions by using organic food waste/wastewater to produce bio-gas and renewable power through an anaerobic digestion process.

Recycling fishing nets

Bureo (via Ocean 14 Capital)

Collects damaged and end of life fishing nets in fishing communities, to turn into recycled nylon that is sold to offtakers such as Patagonia.
