Healthy & Sustainable Living

The way we live at home has a big impact on the planet and our health. Many people want to make healthy and sustainable choices – but not at the expense of price, quality or convenience. With our size and reach, we have a big opportunity to make healthy and sustainable living attractive, affordable and accessible to people around the world.

What we aim to achieve

By promoting more sustainable home furnishing and food products, energy services, solutions to help prolong the lives of products, life-at-home knowledge, and inspiration, we can make healthier and more sustainable living possible for the many people. To achieve this, we actively listen to people in each of our markets and work together with others to create meaningful connections and experiences.

For 2030, our goal is to inspire and enable people to move towards healthy and sustainable lifestyles, by making healthy and sustainable living a desirable choice that is affordable, attractive and accessible for as many people as possible through our products, services, food, marketing and communications.

Our focus areas:

  • Shifting to plant-rich diets
  • Reducing food waste at home
  • Enabling customers to take steps to save energy and water
  • Involving people in the circular economy to reuse, repair, refurbish and recycle
  • Supporting good-quality sleep

Our actions

Plant-rich diets

Every year, IKEA is serving millions of food customers around the world. By including more plant-based alternatives on our menus, we can enable and inspire more people to try plant-based eating. One of the ways we can achieve our vision is to offer affordable and accessible plant-based food with a lower climate impact. We offer them at the same or lower price than meat-based alternatives. Even in cases where the cost of raw materials are higher than the meat-based product. To reach even more customers, we also offer plant-rich alternatives. The aim is to inspire them to eat more delicious dishes that contain less meat (max 25%) and more plants (min 75%), without excluding the animal-derived ingredients from their diet completely.

Food waste

A big part of the food we throw away happens at home. Food waste can be avoided with proper planning, cooking and storing. This knowledge is shared through tips and ideas, as well as showing and offering affordable solutions and products. If we enable people to avoid throwing out good food, they will also save money and lower their climate impact at the same time.

Buy and sell second-hand

To keep our products in use for as long as possible, we make it easy for our customers to buy and sell pre-loved IKEA pieces, either directly from IKEA or from other customers through the IKEA Second‑hand Marketplace. Through our Buyback service, customers can sell their IKEA furniture back to the store and receive in‑store credit. They can also choose to shop second chance products, such as ex-display products.

Spare and assembly parts

Another way of prolonging the life of products is by offering assembly and spare parts. The assembly parts can be ordered for free online and these include nuts, bolts, screws and dowels. We also offer larger furniture spare parts in-store or by contacting our customer service centre.

Energy services

With the IKEA Energy Services, we’re making it easier and more affordable for our customers to use and produce renewable energy, through home solar and electricity subscription services from renewable sources, offered and delivered by local partners in different countries. This is an important contribution towards supporting the transition to a net zero society.

Sustainable living shops

We also continue to develop our in-store Sustainable Living Shops. These are spaces within our stores and online designed to build awareness about sustainable living practices at home. We use them to highlight products and actions that can help customers to: use less energy, use less water, create less waste, and prolong product life.
