How we protect and enhance our forests with conservation and biodiversity

Forests are among the most diverse and crucial ecosystems on earth, yet they face growing threats from climate change, habitat loss, and unsustainable land-use practices.

Their biodiversity – the variety of interconnected life forms from tiny bacteria to huge trees and animals – is key to building resilience against environmental challenges and helps ensure long-term survival. Learn about how we manage conservation and biodiversity across our forestland portfolios.

Setting aside forest areas

20% of our forestland prioritises environmental objectives first with half designated as no-harvest zones to protect rare, threatened, and endangered species and habitats.

  • Riparian zones 5x requirements in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Representative sample areas in Estonia

Prioritising habitat conservation

We are dedicated to minimising the impact on wildlife and safeguarding habitats and ecosystems, both in our set aside priority areas and within our commercial forest areas.

  • Engaging biotope experts in Estonia

Using data for environmental protection

We partner with local conservation organisations to conduct biodiversity studies, habitat mapping, and monitoring programs, using the results to inform our forest management plans.

We always check the sites before any harvesting begins, with innovative digital tools like drones and satellite imagery enhancing our ability to track and protect sensitive ecosystems in real time.

Going beyond FSC certification

While all our forests are FSC certified (or in the process of certification), we aim to go beyond.

FSC certification ensures no net forest loss, but we want to set higher standards for responsible forestry by aiming to pilot an approach that emphasises minimal intervention and natural regeneration.

  • Protecting sensitive areas in the US

Biodiversity is an essential part of our forestry practices.

By dedicating portions of our forestland to conservation and going beyond certification standards, we are committed to protecting and enhancing forest ecosystems. Through innovation and collaboration, we aim to set new standards for responsible forest management, ensuring forests not only survive but thrive.
