Sustainability is part of our roots and our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people. We believe a better life includes living more sustainably.

We want to have a positive impact on people and the planet. For us it’s about balancing economic growth and positive social impact with environmental protection and renewal. This requires a long-term perspective in everything we do: we will meet the needs of people today, without compromising the needs of future generations.

To do this demands rethinking and inspiring changes in lifestyles and consumption, as well as adopting new ways of working. The more people we reach, the bigger impact we can have together and the more people we can enable to live a better everyday life.

Three focus areas

As a response to the three major challenges impacting the IKEA business, we have identified three corresponding focus areas to help us to fulfil the IKEA vision and become people and planet positive.

 

Healthy & sustainable living

Our homes and the way we live have a huge impact on our health, well-being and the planet. Like most people, our customers want to enjoy a decent quality of life without negatively impacting the environment. But not at the expense of price, quality or convenience.

Sustainability cannot be a luxury for the few. We know our customers want IKEA to help make living a more sustainable life affordable, attractive and accessible. By promoting home furnishing and food products, services, life at home knowledge and inspiration based on Democratic Design (combining form, function, quality and sustainability with a low price) we can make healthier and more sustainable living desirable for the many people. To do this, we will actively listen to understand peoples’ needs and dreams in each of our markets and work together with others to create meaningful connections and experiences.

By 2030 our ambition is to inspire and enable more than 1 billion people to live a better everyday life within the limits of the planet.

Circular & climate positive

We have only one planet with limited resources. The long-term prosperity of communities depends on our common efforts to tackle climate change and shift towards a circular society.

Ingka Group is determined to be part of the solution. We will go all-in to transform our operations to become climate positive and contribute to a circular society, and by striving for zero waste. Taking climate action and becoming circular makes good business sense – and it is what our customers expect.

Fair & equal

We are present in many communities. When those communities thrive, we thrive too. We recognise the challenges people are facing and the rapid changes in our communities, particularly where rights and opportunities are far from equal.

Despite these challenges, we know we can make a difference. Guided by our values, we have always been a company that seeks to create lasting positive change in communities.

We will grow our business in an inclusive way. By providing decent and meaningful employment and contributing to positive change in the communities where we are present, we can play our part in creating a fairer and more equal society.

IKEA Retail will lead home-furnishing retail into the future and create a better life for more of the many people by putting the customer at the heart of all we do. The focus areas, goals and activities below are in line with the ambitions set by the IKEA franchisor, and will move us towards our overall ambition of becoming People and Planet Positive, and to inspire and enable the many people to live a better life within the limits of the planet by 2030.

 

Ingka Investments leads with purposeful investments to enable Ingka Group’s long-term growth and financial strength. We are a strategic partner to IKEA Retail and Ingka Centres, securing financial strength for future growth and making investments that contribute to the business objectives of the Ingka Group, including achieving our sustainability strategy, People & Planet Positive.

 

Ingka Centres We want to create great meeting places that become the heart of their community, that are great places to be and that make a positive difference to the many people and the planet, contributing to a better everyday life.

Three major challenges highly relevant for our business have been identified:

Climate change. It is no longer a distant threat, but a visible reality. We believe that climate change is one of the biggest challenges that humanity faces.

Unsustainable consumption. By 2030, nearly half a billion people will move into the middle class. In a world that already uses resources requiring more than one planet, these billions of new consumers put an even greater pressure on the planet.

Inequality. Every year large numbers of people move out of poverty. At the same time, many still struggle on very low incomes, gender equality is far from a reality and many people are still denied basic rights and equal opportunities.
